What do patients with MTBI suffer from?
In the case of TBI, the most involved brain lobes are the fronto-parietal, orbito-frontal and anterior and lateral parts of the temporal lobes; hence the following symptoms and disorders may appear:
1) Post-concussion physiological Disorder:
- Headache at rest, mild to moderate, overall, pounding type
- Dizziness, nausea, tiredness, drowsiness, sensitivity to light and sound, irritability
- Symptoms caused or exacerbated by levels of physical (and sometimes) cognitive activity
2) Post-concussion vestibulo-ocular disorder:
- Mild to moderate headache and eye strain that are usually absent at rest but are caused or exacerbated by prolonged periods of reading, focusing, or in complex visual-spatial environments
- Intermittent blurred vision, diplopia, dizziness, cloudiness, movement sensitivity and difficulty focusing or concentrating
- Intermittent dizziness at certain head positions
3) Post-concussion cervical dysfunction:
- Mild to moderate occipital headache, dull pain, caused or exacerbated by activities requiring stabilization or prolonged neck movements
- Neck pain, stiffness, decreased range of motion, dizziness, cloudiness and postural imbalance
4) Post-traumatic neuropsychological / psychiatric impact:
- Emotional symptoms such as sadness or depressed mood, nervousness or anxiety, irritability, tiredness and difficulty to sleep
- Cognitive symptoms and deterioration of performance or functioning at school
- Isolated suicidal ideas or worsening of symptoms from a pre-injury psychiatric disorder
5) Development of Migraines:
- Paroxysmal attacks of unilateral, severe, throbbing or pulsatile headaches associated with photophobia (light intolerance) and phonophobia (intolerance to noise) and occasional nausea and vomiting.
- Provoked by stereotypical stimuli including bright lights, stress, dehydration, poor sleep and certain foods.
- Headaches last from 4 to 72 hours, after which patients usually have periods of relief.
