What is a MTBI?

Cerebral Concussion or Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI) is a form of traumatic brain injury that affects several lobes of the brain. We note the development of an acceleration force and a deceleration force, so the head is projected into space with a sudden stop when impacting against a solid surface or without impact as in the case of a rear collision of the car.

In these cases, the brain is affected by this trauma. The MTBI then causes temporary alterations in the neurological and neurocognitive functioning that usually resolve in the first two weeks following the injury.

In a subgroup of adult and pediatric patients, however, conservative management will not allow rapid clinical recovery and patients will develop prolonged symptoms characteristic of post-concussion syndrome (PCS). Early and interdisciplinary management is suggested.

Recent advances in exercise science, neurological imaging and clinical research suggest that clinical manifestations of PCS are mediated by different pathophysiological processes:
1. Post-concussion Physiological Disorder
2. Post-concussion vestibulo-ocular disorder
3. Post-concussion cervical disorder
4. Post-traumatic psychological / psychiatric impact
5. And migraines.
