Acute mastoiditis

Acute mastoiditis is a purulent infection of the mastoid air cells. It is the most common suppurative complication of acute otitis media (AOM) especially in children under 2 years. However, in almost half of cases, mastoiditis is diagnosed without being immediately preceded by signs or symptoms suggestive to AOM. It is manifested by fever, peeling of the pinna, ear pain, redness and swelling behind the ear.

We must take in charge mastoiditis to prevent complications such as facial paralysis, abscess, intracranial complications and hearing loss. The treatment involves an antibiotherapy with possibility of myringotomy associated or not to a mastoidectomy.
