Nose fracture

Sports accidents, road accidents and physical altercations are the most common causes. The broken nose can be isolated or accompanied by other facial trauma.

Diagnostic criteria for a nose fracture include:

  1. Edema
  2. Bruising
  3. Local Sensitivity
  4. Presence or absence of a nasal deformity
  5. Presence or absence of a deviation of the nasal septum

The primary goal of the treatment is to restore function and appearance of the nose.

Assessment and immediate closed reduction of the fracture in the three to six hours after the trauma are desirable, if not after this time, patients already have marked edema at the initial examination. In the presence of an aesthetic deformity or residual post-traumatic nasal obstruction, the patient will undergo a rhinoplasty, septoplasty or septo-rhinoplasty six to twelve months after the trauma.

It is best to consult a specialist, especially in the presence of an open fracture or a marked deformity.
