Mastoiditis

Mastoiditis is an infection that spreads to bone cells posterior to the ear. It usually results from untreated acute otitis. Mastoiditis was one of common causes of major complications. However, with the introduction of antibiotics, this infection has become much less common. Antibiotic therapy remains the basic treatment of this infection. If the patient does not respond to antibiotics, a ventilation tube may be inserted in the eardrum, which drains the infection of the middle ear. If the patient does not respond to conservative treatment, mastoidectomy is then considered. The surgeon then proceeds to the drilling of the bone cells of the mastoid bone, obviously under general anesthesia.
