Allergic rhinitis and turbinate hypertrophy
Allergic rhinitis is a hypersensitivity reaction to a foreign substance called allergen such as pollen, mites or other. Allergic rhinitis is an inflammatory disease of the lining of the nose. The latter is characterized by turbinate hypertrophy with congestion, runny nose (rhinorrhea), sneezing, itching of the nose or throat, or by a combination of these symptoms. The association with conjunctivitis (red, watery and itchy eyes) is common. Skin tests can be done to identify the allergens causing rhinitis and desensitization may be considered. The examination of the nose cavity is an essential part of the rhinitis diagnosis. If the medical treatment of turbinate hypertrophy does not solve the nasal obstruction problem, the ORL then proceeds to shrink the turbinates sises by doing a surgery or by cauterization. It is a procedure that can be done under local anesthesia.
