Injection of antibiotic or antimycotic in the mastoid cavity

The opening of the mastoid or mastoidectomy is shown either as a surgical approach to the structures of the inner ear, or as a treatment for diseases of the mastoid, mainly cholesteatoma and mastoiditis. In some cases, a modified radical mastoidectomy is performed, which involves removing the bone that separates the ear canal from the mastoid cavity; then it is called open technique or “canal wall down”. It results in a large cavity that can drains and thus does not meet the ultimate goal of the mastoid surgery in particular “a cavity without problem.”

Consequently, we face a cavity that must avoid water and requires to be cleaned by an ENT, on average every six months. In cases where the mastoid cavity is often infected and flows without response to drops’ treatment, an injection of antibiotic ointment (against bacteria) or antimycotic ointment (against fungi) directly placed into the cavity is indicated. This injection is done under microscopic vision.

The Polyclinique Centre-Ville is outfitted with all the necessary equipment to offer our patients the best treatment according to the rules of art.
