Surgeries of the head and neck
1. Section of the tongue frenulum (the frenectomy)
The tongue frenulum also called lingual frenulum is tissue under the tongue, with a role of holding the tongue. This is not a muscle tissue, but just a portion of the oral mucosa, which is irrelevant. When the lingual frenulum is too short, range of motion of the tongue is excessively restricted. This has consequences on different aspects of oral development, nutrition, speech, swallowing and other associated problems.
The frenectomy is a simple and effective surgical procedure. A single small incision under local anesthesia with small scissors is usually sufficient, and bleeding is minimal. This is much less traumatic than getting your ears pierced. Usually frenectomy does not seem painful and immediate postoperative breastfeeding is a sufficient analgesia for the infant.
