Ear Surgeries
2. Long term subcutaneous tube
This tube is inserted under the skin of the external auditory canal (that’s why it is called “subcutaneous or subannular”) to reach the middle ear behind the eardrum without crossing it; that’s the difference with transtympanic tubes. This tube is also installed with the aid of a microscope. Everything occurs in the ear canal. No external incision is visible.
The subcutaneous tube is proposed after several interventions of transtympanic tube, when the eardrum is very thin or in cases of tympanic membrane retraction.
Although the subcutaneous tube, like the transtympanic tube promotes ventilation of the middle ear in case of fluid behind the eardrum, persistence or presence of retraction, its great advantage is its longer duration. 50% of the subcutaneous tubes last 36 months.
The advantage of performing this surgery under local anesthesia is to avoid general anesthesia and have the opportunity to resume normal daily life, the same day of surgery or the next day, without having to miss the course school or work.
