Ear Surgeries
5. Ossicular reconstruction
This surgery essentially concerns the ossicles that are eroded or blocked and resulting in an impairment of sound transmission to the inner ear (hearing loss). The goal of this surgery is to rebuild an effective sound transmission, from the eardrum to the inner ear. Ossicular reconstruction is frequently associated to tympanoplasty.
In the middle ear, there are three tiny bones: the malleus, incus and stapes.
Depending on which ossicle is affected, ossicular reconstruction or replacement technique will be indicated.
Either one use:
- The incus of the same patient to establish the connection between the malleus and the stapes;
- Medical cement to connect the bones together, if needed;
- An artificial titanium ossicle that we fix it on the head of the stapes. So there is a natural ossicle; one speaks in this case of a partial replacement. (PORP: Partial ossicular replacement prosthesis);
- An artificial titanium ossicle that we fix it on the footplate of the inner ear. So no natural ossicle remains; one speaks in this case of a total replacement. (TORP: Total ossicular replacement prosthesis);
The great advantage of performing this surgery under local anesthesia is to immediately test the hearing improvement during surgery. The patient is not under general anesthesia, he will respond to us and tell us if hearing is improved, so we can make the best adjustment of for optimal hearing. The patient can resume his daily life the same or the next day after surgery, without missing school or work. Certainly you must follow the doctor’s recommendations.
Operated ear care:
You will see your ENT surgeon about a week after the surgery so he can remove your bandage. You should not change, move or moisten the bandage during that time.
