Cervical ganglia

Cervical lymph nodes are very common and normal in children. However, they are much more worrisome in patients over 40 years. Normally, we consider that a node is suspect if it measures over 1.5 cm. Several normal anatomic structures are mistaken for cervical lymph nodes and deserve no treatment or investigation. However, a node greater than 1.5 cm in a 40 years old patient is associated with cancer in more than 50% of cases. The cancer then end up in the head and neck region in 80% of cases where the need for a complete ENT examination, including a laryngoscopy.

If you palpate a new lump in your neck, do not delay to consult an otolaryngologist.
