Vertigo of central origin
This type of vertigo is caused by pathology in the brain. In general, they are not accompanied by cochlear symptoms.
The origin may be ischemic in the cerebellum, brain stem, or tumor in the posterior fossa. If the vestibular nuclei are affected by a tumor or by a demyelination, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), the patient presents with symptoms of imbalance or vertigo.
Certain medications can also give a central like imbalance. In case of suspected central origin of vertigo, a cerebral MRI and a consultation will be required in neurology.
