Migraine and vertigo / Vestibular Migraine

Studies have shown a strong association between vertigo and migraines. This entity, referred to by many authors over the last twenty years, has been recognized in 2012 by the International Headache Society (IHS). Dizziness do appear to be a symptom of migraine. Accurate diagnosis is important because the vestibular migraines respond well to anti-migraine treatments.

The clinical presentation of vertigo in a vestibular migraine patients is very variable. The patient may report a sensation of rotation, tilting, elevation or disequilibrium.

That is, the vestibular migraine, although the name may suggest, is not always accompanied by headache.

The length is also variable, from a few seconds to several days, even weeks.

Note that the dizziness can occur, unlike typical migraine with aura (basilar migraine) before, during or after the headaches.

The history of the disease and clinical examination do not suggest another vestibular disease where such a disease was discussed and discarded. Migraine attacks can be triggered by the vestibular stimulation. For this reason, the differential diagnosis should include other vestibular diseases superimposed by migraine attacks.

The treatment by anti-migrainous drugs found more than 80% efficiency. Treatment includes regular diet and lifestyle recommendations, prophylaxis and anti-migraine medication.
